The world lost a television icon today with the announcement of Kevin Dobson’s passing at the age of 77. Kevin was best known for his roles on some of CBS’ hit shows including Knots Landing, Kojak, and even appeared on the daytime drama Days of Our Lives. The United Veterans Council of San Joaquin County confirmed his passing on their official Facebook page.
The statement read, “The United Veterans Council regrets to inform you that our former Chairman and Army Veteran Kevin Dobson passed away this evening Sunday September 6th, 2020 due to medical complications.”
Dobson had served in the Army and was also the Chairman of his local United Veterans Council. Their statement continued: “Our condolences to his family and May he Rest In Peace. More information will be posted about his funeral services once available.”
Dobson’s path to fame was not typical. He was born in Jackson Heights, New York where his father worked as a janitor. After serving in the Army, his first career was working as a trainman, brakeman, and a conductor on the Long Island Railroad.
He got his first break into the industry with the film Klute, which starred Jane Fonda.
It wasn’t until he played Det. Bobby Crocker in the television series Kojak that he rose to fame. He played the role for the entire 5-season run of the show from 1973-1978.
He then went on to star as Mack MacKenzie on Knots Landing, where he won five Soap Opera Digest Awards.
Dobson was also known as someone who was always willing to help veterans.
Kevin is survived by his wife Susan and three children they shared together. Rest in peace, Kevin. You will be missed!
